Dog Skin Infections

Skin infections, referred to as “pyoderma”, literally means “pus in the skin”. Yuck! Bacterial pyodermas can be simple infections or complex infections. Simple infections are those that can occur in younger dogs triggered by one-time or simple events, such as an infestation of fleas. Complex infections are often recurrent and are associated with underlying diseases, such as allergies (food allergy, atopic dermatitis, flea allergy), certain internal diseases such as problems with the thyroid, seborrheic conditions characterized by excessively dry or oily skin, or parasitic diseases.

Pyoderma is often a secondary disease. It is critical to visit your veterinarian so he/she may identify the underlying cause of your dog’s skin infection. Your veterinarian may prescribe medicated shampoos, antibiotics, or other products to relieve your pet’s discomfort.

Below are some products that Virbac has developed to assist in the management of skin infections in dogs. If you have questions about any of these products, be sure to talk with your veterinarian. As with any product you use on your pet, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.
