How can I protect my dog from fleas and ticks?

Fleas and ticks are hard to avoid. They live in the same environments as your dog—indoors and outdoors—and can grow rapidly in number. For example, one female tick can lay as many as 5,000 eggs over a lifetime, and fleas can hide in your carpeting and furniture.

These parasites can be more than annoying – ticks transmit numerous diseases to your dog, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Fleas can cause skin allergies, itching and tapeworm infections. Mosquitoes may spread heartworm infection, which can be serious and is becoming more and more common.

Effectively controlling fleas and ticks often requires a multipronged approach. You may want to consider a three-step defense that covers your dog, your home and your yard. This can help reduce the number of fleas and ticks in your dog’s environment, your dog’s exposure to them, and the risks of disease caused by them.

Below are some important products that Virbac has developed to control fleas, ticks and more. Talk to your veterinarian about how these products may be used to best protect your dog. As with any treatment, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.

KNOCKOUT™ Area Treatment

KNOCKOUT™ Area Treatment

Protect your home from fleas and ticks with this aerosol spray that kills adult fleas and ticks and sterilizes flea eggs for up to 4 months. Covers approximately 2,000 square feet.

Your Questions Our Answers

It is very frustrating trying to rid fleas from my home.  What other factors should I consider to successfully kill fleas?

None of the ingredients in KNOCKOUT™ Area Treatment affect the pupae life stage of the flea life cycle.  Adult fleas may be observed 2-4 weeks after the initial treatment since fleas previously in the protected pupae are hatching and emerging. Pyriproxyfen, an ingredient in this flea spray, continues to kill fleas for 120 days (4 months) by preventing their development into the adult biting stage. It reaches fleas hidden in carpets, rugs, drapes, upholstery, pet bedding, and floor cracks. It prevents reinfestation and buildup of fleas in the home.

How do I apply KNOCKOUTTM Area Treatment?

SHAKE WELL BEFORE EACH USE. Hold can 2 or 3 feet from surfaces to be treated. Be sure to apply uniformly using a sweeping motion to carpets, rugs, drapes, and all surfaces of upholstered furniture. Be sure to treat pet bedding as this is a primary hiding place for fleas. No need to remove pet bedding after treatment. DO NOT TREAT PETS. Use a registered flea control product on your pets in conjunction with this treatment.  Repeat as necessary. Avoid wetting furniture and carpeting. A fine mist or spray applied uniformly is all that is necessary to kill fleas and ticks.

Can I use KNOCKOUT Area Treatment on a cat or dog?

The spray is intended to treat the environment.  DO NOT TREAT PETS with these products. Since adult fleas live and feed on animals, use a registered flea control product on your pet(s) in conjunction with this treatment.  Please consult with your veterinarian to decide which product is best for your pet(s). Virbac manufactures and markets registered flea and tick products such as EFFITIX® Topical Solution for Dogs and EFFIPRO® Topical Solution for Cats for this purpose.
