Why is my cat having trouble urinating?
When nature calls, cats usually have no problem getting in and out of the litter box without any trouble. However, if a cat is having a problem urinating, it could be a sign that there is a problem with its lower urinary tract, such as a bladder infection. This can cause pain during urination and may eventually lead to the formation of particles or stones that block the flow of urine.
Signs your cat may have a urinary problem can include more frequent visits to the litter box, dribbling urine in small amounts, blood in the urine, crying while in the litter box, or excessively licking the genital area.
Normally, your cat’s urine is acidic and has a low pH level. If your cat has a urinary problem, its urine can become less acidic and have a high pH level. Your veterinarian may recommend a supplement to lower the pH level of your cat’s urine to help prevent infection-causing bacteria from accumulating in the bladder.
Cats can also have problems with the upper urinary tract, which includes the kidneys. Kidney disease can prevent a cat from getting the potassium it needs for important functions like nerve impulses and muscle movement. Such a deficiency can be addressed with a potassium supplement.
Below are some supplements that Virbac has developed for cats with urinary deficiencies. If you have questions about any of these products, be sure to talk with your veterinarian. As with any product you use on your pet, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.
