Cats can get dandruff?

Yes, flakes can appear on a cat’s fur in much the same way specks of dandruff can in human hair. This can happen when an excess of dry, dead skin is shed, which can cause flakes, as well as itchiness.

Fortunately, whether your cat’s skin is too dry or too greasy, it can usually be restored to a healthy sheen with the help of specially formulated shampoos.

Below are some products that Virbac has developed to keep your cat’s skin and coat healthy and looking good. If you have questions about any of these products, be sure to talk with your veterinarian. As with any product you use on your pet, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.

Your Questions Our Answers

Why can’t I use my own shampoo to bathe my dog?

Board certified dermatologist, Dr. Jocelyn Wellington, answers this question best: “When a shampoo formulated for human hair is used repeatedly on a dog, it can alter the dog’s skin pH.  This change in pH can favor overgrowth of bacteria and yeast, then can increase the risk of skin infections.  Also, made-for-human shampoos can remove important natural oils from dog skin resulting in dry scales and, in some cases, scratching.”  ALLERGROOM® Shampoo is pH balanced appropriately for your dog’s or cat’s skin.
