My vet says my cat’s pancreas isn’t working. What does that mean?

As part of the digestive system, the pancreas produces enzymes that help break down food. Disease affecting a cat’s pancreas can prevent the gland from producing these necessary enzymes. As a result, the cat’s body is unable to digest food and absorb the nutrients it needs.

Below are some products that Virbac has developed to help some pancreatic conditions in cats. If you have questions about any of these products, be sure to talk with your veterinarian. As with any product you use on your pet, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.

PANCREZYME® Powder and Tablets

PANCREZYME® Powder and Tablets

Used as a digestive aid in cats that do not adequately break down protein, carbohydrates, and fat because of an insufficiency of enzymes produced by the pancreas. Available in powder and tablet form.

Your Questions Our Answers

Is it difficult to give an enzyme supplement to pets?

As indicated on the package, PANCREZYME Tablets are administered before each meal.  PANCREZME Powder is added to moistened food (canned or kibble), and mixed thoroughly before feeding - never sprinkle directly onto dry kibble.  Let stand at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before feeding.

How long will my pet need to stay on enzyme replacement therapy?

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is an irreversible condition with no currently known cure, so lifelong intake is usually necessary. The outlook is positive for pets that receive enzyme replacement therapy to manage weight loss and regain their well-being.

Are there other ways to help a pet with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI)?

The primary way to help with EPI is to supplement meals with enzyme preparations. If your pet has EPI, he or she also has very special dietary needs. Even with appropriate enzyme therapy, the ability to absorb fat may not return to normal, and your pet may initially need to be fed about 20 percent more than the average daily requirements. Ask your veterinarian to recommend the most appropriate diet and vitamins, along with specific amounts to feed daily for ideal body weight.
