Do cats need to brush too?

Cats do a good job of keeping their coat squeaky clean with their nonstop grooming. But a cat’s tongue can’t keep everything clean—such as the mouth it sits in. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of 3 years.

To check the health of your cat’s mouth, just take a look—and a whiff. If you notice yellow and brown tartar buildup, red, swollen gums, and bad breath that won’t go away, your cat may have periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases seen by veterinarians. Left untreated, it can become irreversible and cause serious health problems, aside from damaging the teeth and gums. Fortunately, periodontal disease is also easy to prevent through routine dental care.

Below are some products that Virbac has developed to help maintain good oral health in cats. If you have questions about any of these treatments, be sure to talk with your veterinarian. As with any treatment, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.
