Does my cat have an infection?

There are a number of ways cats can get infections. Cats are especially prone to infections if they sustain cuts or open wounds. Not surprisingly, cats that spend a lot of time outdoors and in the presence of other cats or animals are more likely to be subject to a scratch or bite that leads to infection. Scratches or bites can cause pus to collect under the skin, creating what is called an abscess.

Cats can also get infections from poor dental health. The plaque and tartar buildup on cats’ teeth can cause infections that lead to periodontal disease. Left untreated, the bacteria from periodontal disease can spread throughout your cat’s entire body and damage major organs.

Below is an antibiotic Virbac has developed to treat cats with certain kinds of skin and dental infections. Your veterinarian can identify whether your cat is suffering from an infection and the best therapy to treat it. As with any treatment, always listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and read the product label.
